Each sweatshirt is made to order in my little village studio, helping me avoid unnecessary stock and reduce waste. As every piece is individually made, there may be small variations in placement and finish- part of the charm of something created on a small scale rather than mass produced.
At the centre is my hand-drawn ghost sitting quietly on a country stile beneath the midnight sky, inspired by one of the eeriest pieces of All Hallows’ Eve folklore.
In Welsh tradition, Nos Calan Gaeaf- All Hallows’ Eve- was regarded as a spirit night, when the boundary between the everyday world and the supernatural felt especially close. One old belief held that at midnight, the ghosts of the dead could be seen sitting on every stile.
Stiles, gateways and crossroads have long occupied a strange place in folklore too- thresholds between one place and another, making them natural settings for stories of wandering spirits, omens and encounters with the otherworld.
My little ghost is rather less frightening than the old tales suggest, though. They seem perfectly content to sit beneath the stars, quietly keeping watch over the path until morning.
Perfect for folklore lovers, autumn wanderers and anyone who would quite happily join a midnight woodland dance.
