All Hallows’ eve dancing animals sweatshirt

Each sweatshirt is made to order in my little village studio, helping me avoid unnecessary stock and reduce waste. As every piece is individually made, there may be small variations in placement and finish- part of the charm of something created on a small scale rather than mass produced.

At the centre is my hand-drawn All Hallows’ Eve Woodland Dance, where a rather unlikely group of woodland friends have joined hands for their own midnight celebration: a vampire fox, pumpkin-clad badger, ghostly rabbit, mummy deer, witchy hedgehog and masked squirrel.

The illustration is inspired by the folklore surrounding All Hallows’ Eve- a night traditionally filled with stories of wandering spirits, disguises, divination and strange happenings after dark. Their costumes also nod to old traditions of guising, when people went from door to door in disguise, sometimes performing in exchange for food or treats.

There are little pieces of countryside folklore hidden among the characters too. Brock is an old country name for the badger, foxes have long taken the role of the clever trickster in folk tales, white rabbits became associated with good luck, and hedgehogs were once surrounded by some wonderfully peculiar old beliefs.

The result is a celebration of the mischievous rather than macabre side of All Hallows’ Eve- as though, somewhere beyond the last cottage in the village, the woodland animals have been keeping their own October traditions all along.
